Garages often become a catch-all for anything that doesn’t have a designated spot inside the house. While they’re great for parking cars, storing tools, and housing seasonal gear, not everything belongs in this space. In fact, keeping certain items in your garage can lead to damage, safety hazards, and even pest infestations.
If your garage is overflowing, it might be time to reassess what’s stored there. Here’s a list of things that shouldn’t be in your garage—and where they should go instead.
Propane Tanks
Why Not? Propane tanks are highly flammable, and storing them in an enclosed space with fluctuating temperatures increases the risk of leaks and explosions.
Better Storage Solution: Keep propane tanks outdoors in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. A secure shed or covered outdoor space works best.
Paper Products (Cardboard Boxes, Newspapers, Books)
Why Not? Paper attracts rodents and insects, which can chew through materials and create nests. Additionally, paper is highly flammable and poses a fire hazard in a garage.
Better Storage Solution: Store important documents inside airtight containers in a home office, closet, or attic. For newspapers and magazines, recycle or donate them as soon as possible.
Clothing and Bedding
Why Not? Fabrics stored in garages are vulnerable to moisture, mold, and pests, including moths and rodents.
Better Storage Solution: Use vacuum-sealed bags or plastic bins and store these items in a climate-controlled space like a closet or under-bed storage. If keeping seasonal clothing in the attic, make sure it’s well-sealed to prevent pests.
Food (Pet Food and Canned Goods)
Why Not? Heat and humidity can cause canned goods to spoil faster, while dry pet food attracts rodents and insects.
Better Storage Solution: Keep non-perishable food in your pantry, and store pet food in an airtight container inside the house.
Electronics
Why Not? Extreme temperatures and humidity can cause electronics to corrode or malfunction. Additionally, garages are more susceptible to theft, putting valuable items at risk.
Better Storage Solution: Store electronics inside the home, preferably in a dry and temperature-controlled area like an office or storage closet.
Wine and Perishable Beverages
Why Not? Wine and other beverages are sensitive to temperature changes, which can alter their taste and spoil them faster.
Better Storage Solution: Store wine in a wine fridge or a cool, dark pantry. Keep perishable beverages in a kitchen refrigerator.
Important Documents and Photographs
Why Not? Paper is sensitive to humidity and temperature fluctuations, which can cause it to degrade over time. Important documents like birth certificates, tax records, and family photos can also be damaged by pests or moisture.
Better Storage Solution: Keep these in a fireproof safe inside your home, preferably in a climate-controlled area like a home office or bedroom closet.
Cosmetics and Toiletries
Why Not? Many beauty products and toiletries degrade when exposed to heat, which can change their texture, consistency, and effectiveness.
Better Storage Solution: Keep these items in a bathroom cabinet or bedroom drawer.
Decluttering your garage isn’t just about making space—it’s also about protecting your belongings and keeping your home safe. By relocating these items to more suitable storage areas, you’ll prevent damage, reduce safety risks, and create a more organized and functional garage.
